Updates to the UK ETA Program

Travelers planning a visit to Northern Ireland or the UK in 2025 and beyond should be aware of the new requirement for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). This regulation took effect on January 8, 2025, for visitors from non-visa national countries, including the United States. On April 2, 2025 the requirement was expanded to include most European countries. You will need an ETA if you are transiting through a UK airport and pass through border control - check with your airline if you are not sure. Here’s what you need to know:
WHAT IS THE ETA?
The ETA is an online travel authorization linked to your passport, allowing entry into Northern Ireland and the UK. It is mandatory for all non-visa nationals, and it must be applied for in advance of your travel.
COST
The application fee was increased to £16 on April 9 and each traveler, including children and infants, must have their own ETA. The ETA will be valid for two years or until your passport expires, allowing multiple entries for stays of up to six months
HOW TO APPLY
The ETA must be applied for online through the UK government website or via the UK ETA app. Approval typically takes up to three working days, so plan accordingly
IMPORTANT NOTES
British and Irish citizens do not require an ETA
Failure to obtain an ETA may result in denial of entry or deportation, even when crossing into Northern Ireland from the Republic of Ireland where there are currently no border checks
